The MA in European, Economics and Law provides a strong foundation in European Studies. It includes compulsory study-units in these subject areas and a wide range of elective study-units on key topics, including lobbying in the EU, EU treaties and laws, the politics and economics of European Integration, the EU’s external relations, EU cohesion policy, climate change and current political and economic developments.

The course is taught on a seminar basis and is intended to further deepen your knowledge of European politics, law and economics so that by the end of the course they can rightly claim to be ‘specialised generalists’ i.e. graduates with a broad knowledge of the EU but with a deeper specialised understanding in particular areas. The aim is to encourage students to develop their analytical and critical skills – something which is aided by the way the seminars are structured.

The specialised training in EU politics, economics and law ensure that you will have a high level of skills and a degree of personal initiative to help them deal most satisfactorily with situations requiring more than a working knowledge of the EU. The best graduates qualify for middle management positions.

The following are a sample of learning outcomes that you will bring to your workplace:

  • In-depth understanding of the rationale, principles and issues underlying the various Community harmonisation directives relating to IPRs and the EU regulations establishing unitary EU-wide IPRs and the impact that these measures have had on national laws and on the rights of IPR holders.
  • An understanding of the most prominent issues in contemporary European politics, primarily by utilising a comparative method grounded in both national and European politics.
  • Understanding of the legal issues behind the institutional balance of the EU.
  • Appreciation of the role that institutions play in the formulation of EU law and how they continue to evolve to meet the present-day expectations of the EU.
  • Demonstration of the ability to conduct independent and original research as well as identifying research aims, generating research questions, reviewing literature, formulation a research methodology, collecting data, thinking and writing critically as well as producing a coherent and informed piece of work.
  • Understanding of issues relating to the relationship between national law and EU law.
  • Non EU Applicants:

    Total Tuition Fees: Eur 10,800
    Yr 1: Eur 5,400 - Yr 2: Eur 5,400

You are viewing the fees for non EU nationals. Switch to EU nationals if you are a national of any country from within the EU/EEA.

The MA is intended if you wish to further your studies at post-graduate level. As an eventual graduate in employment, you will often deal with EU matters and for that reason you will find the MA useful in further developing your skills for the position you already occupy. You may also decide to follow the MA to help in your career advancement, given that the EU has become such an important factor in most situations, thus making it easier to switch a career with ease.

The degree provides further study leading to the Ph.D. The Masters' degree is also very if you are seeking to work in the EU institutions or in international organizations, or aspire to high positions in the business sector.
